How long does it take to get my media digitized?
Turn around times can vary greatly, depending on your order size and how many other customers are in line ahead of you. I recommend planning for at least 4 to 6 weeks for your order to be completed.
Can you do rush orders?
Yes, with an additional charge. Email videomodemedia@gmail.com with your order details or click HERE to request an estimate.
Where are you located?
I am in Stockton, UT.
Do you keep copies of my files?
Yes. I typically keep your media on file for about 3 months after your order is completed in case you need any additional flash drives, edits or DVD/CD copies.
What formats do you save digital files in?
I use file formats that have the widest compatibility range with current and older devices.
Video files from video tapes are saved with H.264 compression in an MP4 container. Video is de-interlaced during capture at a resolution of 640 x 480 at 29.97 fps with square pixel aspect ratio. 8mm film is saved in as H.264, MP4 files at a resolution of 960 x 1440.
Audio files are recorded as uncompressed files and the final, edited files are saved as MP3 files at 320 kbps. Files can be saved as uncompressed WAV files or lossless FLAC files by request. Audio CDs are recorded using the uncompressed recordings.
Photos and Negatives are scanned at 600 ppi and saved as 100% quality JPG files. Slides are scanned as 20 megapixel JPG files.
What if I don’t know what’s on my video tapes? Can you omit tapes or portions of tapes if I don’t want them?
Yes. I go through all your recordings during my Complimentary Clean-up Edits, and if there are certain types of videos you would like removed, (TV recordings, specific events, etc.) I will take them out. If there are entire tapes with recordings you don’t want, you will not be charged for those specific tapes.
Should I get my files on a USB Flash Drive, Digital Download or DVDs?
Your choice of return media should be determined what your viewing or sharing preference is.
USB Flash Drive(s) - If you will have a large amount of files, and if you prefer watching your videos, listening to your audio files or viewing your photos on a smart TV or computer. Also if you want to make digital copies of your files for family or friends or upload them to the internet.
Digital Download - If you prefer downloading your files to your computer. This is not recommended if you have a large amount of files. Your file download link will remain active for about 3 months.
DVDs/CDs - If you still have a functioning DVD or CD player and that’s what you prefer to watch your videos or listen to your audio recordings on. Note: DVD & CD recordings degrade over time. A non-commercial produced DVD/CD has a typical lifespan of about 10 to 15 years, depending on the storage conditions.
What types of flash drives do you provide?
I use name brand flash drives for quality and reliability, usually Sandisk or PNY. I do not use cheap, bulk flash drives because they have a tendency to fail. I use USB version 2.0 for the widest compatibility. USB-C flash drives are available upon request.
What types of repairs can you do?
I can repair most video and audio tapes. If the tape on the inside is broken, I can splice it back together for playback. If the tape reel case itself is broken, I will take it apart and transfer the reels to a functioning reel case. If your 8mm film is broken, I can splice it together, or simply scan the separate sections and put them together in the Complimentary Clean-up Edit. If you have DVDs or CDs that are scratched and won’t play, I will use a disc resurfacer to attempt to restore the play surface.
Can I provide my own USB Flash Drive or external hard drive?
Yes, if the flash drives are new and the hard drive is freshly formatted and empty.
Can you create DVDs with interactive menus?
Yes. I can create interactive menus for your DVDs by request for an additional charge. See my price list HERE.
Can you create audio CDs with separate audio tracks?
Yes. Typically audio files I put on CD are the individual sides of audio cassettes. So a tape with recordings on both sides will be recorded as 2 tracks on the CD. If you have a recording of songs or you would like to split up your recordings into separate tracks, I can do that for an additional charge. See my price list HERE.
Do you add music to 8mm film?
Yes. I add long playing music to your 8mm film recordings since they do not have their own audio. I usually use instrumental folk guitar, bluegrass or classical, depending on what seems to fit best. I can use specific types of music by request.
Can you convert camcorder tapes to digital files?
Yes. I can convert VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV tapes to digital files.
Can you convert camcorder Mini DVDs to digital files?
Yes. I do a direct RIP (Raster Image Processing) from your camcorder DVDs to digital files. The individual video files are saved how they were originally saved to the DVDs.
I have camcorder DVDs that have not been finalized and I don’t have a working camera anymore. Can you still convert them to digital files?
Yes. I use special software that can access the video files on non-finalized camcorder DVDs.
Do you do digital file recovery?
I can only attempt file recovery from optical media, (DVDs, CDs). I do not have the means to recover files from failed hard drives or flash drives.
Do you do photo restoration?
Yes. I can do clean-up and color correction on most photo scans.
Can you scan large photos?
Yes. I can scan up to 11.3” x 18.”
Can you scan large negatives?
Yes. I have the ability to do high quality scans of negatives that are larger than 35mm. As part of the scanning process, I also do exposure correction to these scans. These vintage negatives are great for making beautiful, larger prints.
